Pakistan Australia Association of Melbourne’s (PAAM) Meet & Greet dinner

The past two years have been toughest in recent history, due to the harsh health, economic, and social impacts of the COVID-19 crisis.  Melbourne suffered the harshest restrictions on the planet and spent almost 18 months in restrictions.

The past two years have been toughest in recent history, due to the harsh health, economic, and social impacts of the COVID-19 crisis.  Melbourne suffered the harshest restrictions on the planet and spent almost 18 months in restrictions.

The impacts have been felt in every community, with no community spared. The Pakistani community was no exception, all social events, weddings and other religious festivals were banned and the community had no mass gathering.

PAAM being forefront of organisations, quickly ceased an opportunity with newly posted Pakistani High commissioner H.E (Mr. Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri) as well as Counsel General for Southern Australia (Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania) H.E. (Syed Moazzam Shah) and organised a meet & greet dinner.

The dinner was organised on the fabulous Victoria star cruise ship docked at Melbourne, Docklands.

The event gave the opportunity to everyone to meet the High commissioner who travelled all the way from Canberra for first time.  He was accompanied with his wife and children who were also invited by PAAM.  The event started as usual with Tilawat and translation by Alliya and Ali.  President of PAAM Aqueel Syed paid respect to traditional custodian of land and also Welcome guests.  National anthem of Pakistan and Australia were played.  The highlight of the event was the award s, specifically life time achievement award presented to Hasnain Wali Karim for winning Mr. Australia 2020 and  Col. Mohammad Arif for serving the community for over 25 years.

There were also two more community awards given to Adanan Khwaja and Ali Syed for recognising their tireless wok for organising cricket tournaments.  There awards were also given to high achievers who scored above 90 percent in their VCE.  They were Aaliyan Azeem, Abdullah Waraich, Romana Waseem, Muhammad Ahsan Inam and Shujain Ahmed.

Rana Shahid Master of ceremony (MC) conducted the event in such an organised way that it was appreciated by all attendees.  Stand-up comedy performed by Nadeem Nadvi followed by Milli songs by young kids.   Dr. Shabaz also thanked guests and attendees.  H.E Zahid Hafeez and Bronwyn Halfpenny also addressed the community.  H.E Zahid Hafeez highlighted close ties between Australia and Pakistan.  He is very keen to increase trade between Australia and Pakistan and would like to take it to next level.  He also thanked Pakistani diaspora for contributing positively to the Australian society and integrating in the wider Australian community.
